Previews
Stranger Than Heaven has been previewed in a 45-minute combat demo at Summer Game Fest in June 2026, a Gamescom demo in August 2026, and a three-hour hands-on embargoed to Oct 21, 2026, which won over critics such as IGN while PCGamesN still found the group fights clunky. There are no reviews or review scores as of Nov 3, 2026.
Stranger Than Heaven's previews so far are mostly positive and grew warmer with each build: press played a 45-minute combat demo at Summer Game Fest in June 2026, SEGA showed a combat demo at Gamescom in August 2026, and a three-hour hands-on, embargoed to Oct 21, 2026, covered the prologue, Kokura, and free roam in Kure and Osaka. IGN's Michael Higham went from doubting the "slower, clunky" combat in June to "all-in" in October, and Game Informer, Game Rant, TechRadar and CGMagazine praised the story and style; PCGamesN still found the group street fights "clunky and over-engineered." These are impressions of unfinished builds. There are no reviews, Metacritic or OpenCritic scores as of Nov 3, 2026, and the review embargo has not been announced; the game is out on Jan 15, 2027.

Is Stranger Than Heaven good?
Nobody can say yet: no review has been published as of Nov 3, 2026. What exists is preview impressions of pre-release builds, and they lean positive. The story, the writing, the style and the Showbiz system drew the most praise in October; the combat split opinion in June and mostly won people over in October, with the group fights the one repeated doubt. In the clip Game Rant's Josh Cotts sums up his October 2026 hands-on.
Summer Game Fest, June 2026
The first hands-on was a 45-minute combat-only demo of three encounters in three eras: Kokura in 1915 unarmed, then Kure in 1929 and Osaka in 1943 with weapons. In the clip Easy Allies describe the demo's beginner, intermediate and advanced encounters.
| Outlet | Date | What they said |
|---|---|---|
| Game Informer (Brian Shea) | Jun 11, 2026 | The final swordsman fight in Osaka took seven tries and patient parrying |
| PCGamesN (Tom Hopkins) | Jul 18, 2026 | Deep, satisfying combat; enemies block and feint, a boss could knock Makoto out in two hits |
| IGN (Michael Higham) | June 2026 | Unsure about the "slower, clunky" combat, as he recalled on Oct 21, 2026 |
| Screen Rant, GameSpot | June 2026 | Combat impressions SEGA highlighted |

PCGamesN's headline sums up the June mood among those who liked it: Hopkins did not expect such deep combat. The PCGamesN boss fight was an agile woman who feigned injury to sweep Makoto's legs.
Gamescom, August 2026
SEGA brought a demo to Gamescom 2026 with combat from three eras, 1915 Kokura, 1929 Kure and 1943 Minami, and by Aug 28 had released a 12-minute playthrough of it along with an interview of over 17 minutes with Masayoshi Yokoyama. Gamescom also brought interviews: producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto spoke to PCGamesN about the theme song and about recreating Tupac Shakur without AI. No outlet's Gamescom hands-on impressions were among the sources read for this page. The clip is from that playthrough: the 1929 Kure title card, then a fight.
Tokyo Game Show, September 2026
At Tokyo Game Show (Sep 17 to 21, 2026) the game was played on stage rather than by the press: daily stage events at the SEGA booth included gameplay by wrestler Kenny Omega, kson and Ushizawa, streamed on RGG Studio's YouTube channel. A Sep 16 livestream showed about 10 minutes of the opening.
The three-hour hands-on, October 2026
Press played about three hours in October (in New York, per Game Rant): the prologue, the Kokura story and free roam in Kure and Osaka. The embargo lifted on Oct 21, 2026.
| Outlet | What stood out | Doubts |
|---|---|---|
| IGN (Michael Higham) | "A complete 180-degree turn" on combat; the directional parry; over 15 minutes of Kokura cutscenes held his attention | Little: he came away "all-in" |
| Game Informer (Brian Shea) | A story of biculturalism, music and fitting in; Showbiz promotion; the Kure fight arena; ended on the Shimura boss fight | None reported in our sources |
| PCGamesN (Tom Hopkins) | A strong opening and writing; more style than the Yakuza series | Group street fights "clunky and over-engineered" |
| Game Rant (Josh Cotts) | New activities in each era; in one era almost every building could be entered | None reported in our sources |
| TechRadar | A "bold, ambitious, and unique origin story" | As quoted by SEGA |
| CGMagazine | "An Excellent Performance So Far" (headline) | As quoted by SEGA |

The change in IGN's view matters because director Mikinobu Abe told IGN that RGG Studio reworked the combat after feedback on the earlier demos. Game Informer also interviewed Abe and Yu Shirota, who plays Makoto Daito, about the mixed English and Japanese dialogue. One detail from that preview is wrong: it places Kure in 1919, while SEGA and Steam say 1929.
What previews have not covered
As of Nov 3, 2026 no hands-on has reached Atami 1951 or Shinjuku 1965, and no one has said how long the game is, what difficulty modes it has, or how it runs on PC, where Steam still lists the PC Requirements as TBD. Those answers wait for reviews.

ShowbizShowbiz is Stranger Than Heaven's show business system, in which Makoto Daito scouts performers through rumors, records sounds to compose songs, then plans and stages shows (setlist, band, cast, lighting, props, promotion, ticket prices) and runs them as a light rhythm game. It replaces the karaoke and club management of the Like a Dragon games. -
CombatStranger Than Heaven's combat gives Makoto Daito two independently controlled sides, a left and a right arm and leg, with light attacks on the bumpers, heavy attacks on the triggers, grabs on both triggers, and directional guards, dodges and parries. Everything known comes from SEGA and from previews of pre-release builds, the latest embargoed to Oct 21, 2026. -
Makoto DaitoMakoto Daito is the hero of Stranger Than Heaven, the son of an American father and a Japanese mother who flees San Francisco for Japan in 1915 and, over fifty years, becomes a yakuza known as the Red Oni and a showman. He is portrayed by Yu Shirota.

Kure 1929Kure in Hiroshima, in 1929, is the second era of Stranger Than Heaven, a yakuza-run naval port where Makoto Daito joins the Iwaki Family and becomes known as the "Red Oni." Previews showed it under snow, with a fight arena and a masked killer. -
