Is Stranger Than Heaven a Yakuza Game?

Stranger Than Heaven is set in the same fictional world as Like a Dragon (Yakuza), shows the founding of the Tojo Clan and ends in Kamurocho, but RGG Studio says it is a new title, not a series entry. The press often calls it a prequel.

Stranger Than Heaven is not a Like a Dragon (Yakuza) game by its makers' account, but it is set in the same world: the Tojo Clan, the crime family at the heart of the series, is founded in it, and its last chapter takes place in Kamurocho in 1965. RGG Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama said in September 2026 that "we don't think it would be right to call it a series entry", and the director says it was not made as a prologue. Much of the press calls it a Yakuza prequel anyway. Both are true in their way: it is the history of the Like a Dragon world, told as a separate game with a new cast and new systems. In the clip, from IGN's Gamescom 2026 interview, director Mikinobu Abe says the team sees it as a brand new game and IP rather than a prequel.

Is Stranger Than Heaven a Yakuza prequel?

In story terms it comes before the series: the game covers 1915 to 1965 and shows how the Tojo Clan of the later games began. The May 6, 2026 Xbox Presents broadcast opened with Makoto Daito founding the Tojo Clan as a place for people with nowhere else to go, and CGMagazine titled its report "Confirms It's a Yakuza Prequel." AUTOMATON has called it a prequel to the Like a Dragon series, and Game Informer says it tells the founding of the Tojo Clan as it later appears in the series. The clip is IGN's Michael Higham after the Summer Game Fest 2026 demo: the Tojo Clan is part of the story, though it is "not exactly a prequel."

RGG's own wording is different. SEGA announced it as a brand-new title from the makers of Yakuza and Like a Dragon, without describing a series link, and director Mikinobu Abe told Game Informer it was not meant as a prologue but as "something brand new". Abe's starting point was a question from the Yakuza games: who would build an organization like the Tojo Clan or the Omi Alliance, and why. In the clip, from SEGA's Gamescom 2026 developer interview, a developer says in Japanese that the team had long wanted to tell how the series' yakuza organizations came to be, from 1915 on.

What RGG Studio says

At Tokyo Game Show 2026 Yokoyama said the Tojo Clan and places such as Kamurocho appear and that the game is part of Like a Dragon's fictional world, but that RGG makes it as a completely new title, under the name Stranger Than Heaven. In January 2026 he told Game Informer it would differ entirely in both scale and gameplay from the series. TechRadar reported Abe saying the team intentionally forgot about Yakuza and started from scratch.

How is it different from Like a Dragon?

Yokoyama named four differences at TGS 2026: no cabaret club, no karaoke, different controls and different progression systems. What previews and SEGA add: In the clip, GameSpot's Aug 26, 2026 preview of a pre-release build warns that the combat is like neither the Yakuza brawlers nor Like a Dragon's turn-based battles.

IGN describes Showbiz as a fusion of the series' club management and karaoke minigames, so the spirit of those side activities carries over in a new form. See Combat and Showbiz. The clip is IGN's Oct 21, 2026 preview of the three-hour pre-release build.

Are Kiryu or other series characters in it?

None has been announced. Takaya Kuroda, the Japanese voice of Kazuma Kiryu, plays a new character, the craftsman Takeo Godai, not Kiryu (see Takeo Godai). AUTOMATON reported that Kazuhiro Nakaya, Ichiban Kasuga's voice, will not appear. Every character on the cast page is new; see Characters and Cast.

Is Makoto Daito Makoto Tojo?

Not confirmed. PC Gamer pointed out that the Tojo Clan's founder in the Yakuza series is named Makoto, suggesting Makoto Daito may be him. That is PC Gamer's speculation; SEGA and RGG have not said so as of Nov 3, 2026. What the 1965 Kamurocho chapter reveals is held back: Yokoyama calls it a "tremendous secret". See Tojo Clan and Shinjuku 1965.

Do you need to play Yakuza first?

No. RGG presents it as a new title with a new hero, and the story begins in 1915 with nothing from the series assumed. Fans will recognize the Tojo Clan and Kamurocho, and Games to Play Before Stranger Than Heaven lists the games that give that context. In the clip, from SEGA's Gamescom 2026 developer interview, a developer says no knowledge of Yakuza, Judgment or RGG's other games is needed.
