Showbiz

Showbiz is Stranger Than Heaven's show business system, in which Makoto Daito scouts performers through rumors, records sounds to compose songs, then plans and stages shows (setlist, band, cast, lighting, props, promotion, ticket prices) and runs them as a light rhythm game. It replaces the karaoke and club management of the Like a Dragon games.

Showbiz is the second half of Stranger Than Heaven: alongside the street fights, Makoto Daito works as a showman, an impresario who gathers rumors to scout singers and performers, records ambient sounds to create original music, designs shows and tours the country, in SEGA's words on Steam. A show is built in steps: find the talent, collect sounds, compose the songs part by part, pick the setlist, band and star, set the lights and props, promote it, price the tickets, then perform it as an easygoing rhythm game. It runs through every era of the fifty-year story and takes the place of the karaoke and hostess club minigames of the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) games. All of this comes from SEGA and from previews of pre-release builds; the game is out on Jan 15, 2027. In the clip Game Rant's Josh Cotts describes Showbiz in the October 2026 build.

How does Makoto become a showman?

In the story, Orpheus, the smuggler who finds Makoto stowed away on the ship to Japan, sees his musical talent, and SEGA's official site describes Makoto growing into a showman who sings and runs shows across Japan. His sworn younger brother Takashi, a gifted pianist, revives his passion for music. The Story page covers how this career runs beside his life in the yakuza. The clip is director Mikinobu Abe telling IGN at Gamescom 2026 how Makoto, after meeting Orpheus, turns to show business.

Step 1: scouting performers

Performers are found the way side stories are: through rumors and NPC dialogue picked up around each city. Named singers so far are Suzy Day, played by Tori Kelly, whose rise begins when she meets Makoto, and Keiko Shirai, the songstress of wartime Osaka, played by Ado. The Xbox Presents demo on May 6, 2026 showed a five-piece band.

Step 2: collecting sounds

Makoto can record sounds anywhere, such as brooms, trains and enemy impacts, into a library he composes from. Game Informer's Brian Shea drew ideas in the October build from a crying baby and from his weapon striking a thug, so fights feed the music too. The clip is the May 6, 2026 Xbox Presents broadcast showing Makoto recording sounds.

Step 3: composing songs

Makoto writes songs with composers he meets. Each song has four parts, lead, rhythm, bass and drums, and each part can be set to a different instrument, mood or tonality, which changes the song's genre, IGN reported on Oct 21, 2026. How many instruments and moods exist, and whether each era unlocks its own, has not been published as of Nov 3, 2026. In the clip IGN's Michael Higham reworks each track of a song in the October 2026 build.

Part What can be set
Lead Instrument, mood, tonality
Rhythm Instrument, mood, tonality
Bass Instrument, mood, tonality
Drums Instrument, mood, tonality

Step 4: planning the show

SEGA's Sep 26, 2026 Showbiz deep dive lists the choices before a show: the setlist, the star singer, which musician plays which role, and the promotion. Steam adds the cast, the band, lighting and staging. The clip is SEGA's Showbiz In-Depth Look.

Step 5: staging, promotion and ticket prices

Running the theater is a small business sim. PCGamesN's Tom Hopkins hired musicians, picked instruments, and set stage props, lighting and ticket prices to draw customers and make a profit. Promotion is physical: Game Informer's Brian Shea negotiated with business owners for billboard space before a theater show. PCGamesN calls Showbiz the game's main business activity, in the slot that real estate management held for Kazuma Kiryu. In the clip SEGA's Showbiz In-Depth Look weighs better musicians and stage effects against their cost.

Step 6: the performance

The show itself is played. IGN describes an easygoing rhythm game in which the player times the transitions of lights and stage effects to keep the crowd engaged. What a good or bad night pays or changes is not known as of Nov 3, 2026. In the clip SEGA's Showbiz In-Depth Look shows the revenue meter and the cues for lights and effects.

How does it replace karaoke and club management?

Masayoshi Yokoyama listed "no cabaret club, no karaoke" among the ways Stranger Than Heaven differs from Like a Dragon (AUTOMATON, Sep 29, 2026). IGN describes Showbiz as a fusion of RGG's club management and karaoke minigames that runs through every era. Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto told PCGamesN that the jazz bars and showbiz balance the game's more serious tone, standing in for the casual karaoke bar. Singing is the theme of the whole cast: Yokoyama chose Yu Shirota and Dean Fujioka partly for their musical backgrounds. For the songs themselves, see Music and Theme Song.

Deluxe Edition performers and stage items

The Deluxe Edition adds 4 skilled performers, 3 stage production items and a special promotional poster, all for Showbiz, unlocked through main story progress. SEGA has not named the performers or items as of Nov 3, 2026.

Frequently asked questions
