Story

Stranger Than Heaven follows Makoto Daito, the son of an American father and a Japanese mother, for fifty years from San Francisco in 1915 to Shinjuku in 1965, as he rises from stowaway to yakuza to showman and founds the Tojo Clan. This page tells the story as SEGA and pre-release previews have shown it, as of Nov 3, 2026.

Stranger Than Heaven is a fifty-year saga about Makoto Daito, a boy born in San Francisco to an American father and a Japanese mother, who stows away on a ship to Japan in 1915 and lives through five cities and eras of the country up to 1965. SEGA sums it up as a story "of those with nowhere to go" and their struggle to find a home. Along the way Makoto becomes a feared yakuza in Kure, a showman who stages concerts across Japan, and the founder of the Tojo Clan, the syndicate later at the center of the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) games. The game comes out on Jan 15, 2027, so everything below comes from SEGA's own descriptions, its trailers and the hands-on previews of pre-release builds, each dated. Nothing past what SEGA and the previews have shown is told here. In the clip, director Mikinobu Abe tells IGN the game follows Makoto's life from 1915 to 1965 as the eras change.

What is Stranger Than Heaven about?

It is one man's life told across half a century. Makoto Daito loses both parents in America, where he is persecuted for his Asian heritage, and crosses the Pacific to his mother's homeland hoping Japan will accept him. It does not, at first: in Kokura locals call him "ketō," a period slur for Westerners, and dismiss him because his Japanese is still poor, Game Informer reported from its Oct 21, 2026 preview. Netflix's announcement of a film adaptation put the arc in one line: a foreigner rising from destitute stranger to feared yakuza to entertainment tycoon.

Two threads run through every era. One is crime: Makoto works for a smuggler, fights the gangs of each city and joins a yakuza family. The other is music: his mentor discovers his talent early, and Makoto grows into a showman who scouts singers, writes songs from sounds he records and stages shows across Japan. That second thread is the game's Showbiz system. In the clip Abe tells IGN how Orpheus and the need to make money lead Makoto into show business.

The story era by era

1915, San Francisco. The game opens with young Makoto sneaking aboard a ship in the harbor at night. In the October preview build he is wrongly accused of a crime and flees the police to the last ship out; the chase is the combat tutorial. On board he meets Yu Shinjo, a slightly older boy of mixed heritage, and is caught by Orpheus, a "cutthroat and charismatic smuggler" in Xbox Wire's words, who nearly throws both boys overboard and then takes Makoto on because he speaks Japanese. More on San Francisco 1915. The clip is SEGA's Act I story trailer.

1915, Kokura. The ship lands in a smoke-filled foundry town. Makoto runs jobs for Orpheus, falls for the bar worker Tae Matsumoto and crosses the Oki Clan, whose leader keeps Tae as his mistress; the preview chapter ends with Makoto storming an ironworks mill to rescue her and fighting the brute Shimura, Game Informer reported. Yu Shinjo goes his own way here: the two part in Fukuoka and meet again later as partners. More on Kokura 1915. The clip is VGC's Kokura footage of the pre-release build, where Makoto hears that Oki wants him dead over Oki's mistress.

1929, Kure. Fifteen years later, Makoto is in a naval port run by yakuza. He joins the Iwaki Family, Hiroshima's strongest organization, and earns the name "Red Oni." The family's boss, Genzo Iwaki, is played in CG by the late Bunta Sugawara. Director Mikinobu Abe called joining the Iwaki family a major part of the story. More on Kure 1929. The clip is SEGA's In-Depth Look at Kure.

1943, Minami. In wartime Osaka, Makoto and Yu reunite and go into show business, while yakuza and the Italian Mafia compete in the shadows. Locals now greet Makoto with smiles; Game Informer's preview had him start a promotion company with Yu and stage a theater show. The district's star singer is Keiko Shirai, played by Ado. More on Minami 1943. The clip is SEGA's In-Depth Look at Minami.

1951, Atami. In a postwar seaside resort, with American influence spreading through Japan, Makoto meets Suzy Day, an ambitious singer played by Tori Kelly. SEGA had shown little more of this era as of Nov 3, 2026. More on Atami 1951. The clip is from the Xbox Presents broadcast: Tori Kelly speaks about her character, Suzy, between shots of Suzy on stage.

1965, Shinjuku. The story ends in Kamurocho, the fictional district of the Like a Dragon games, where Masayoshi Yokoyama says a "tremendous secret will be revealed." Nothing of it has been played. More on Shinjuku 1965.

The full table of eras is on Five Eras and Cities.

How does Makoto found the Tojo Clan?

SEGA has shown the founding but not how the story reaches it. The May 6, 2026 Xbox Presents broadcast opened with Makoto announcing his own crime family, the "Tojo Clan," as "a place for people with nowhere else to go," words that echo SEGA's own summary of the game. Abe told Game Informer that the starting point was a question the team had while making Yakuza games: who would create an organization like the Tojo Clan or the Omi Alliance, and why, since the series never explained it.

Abe also said the game was not made as a prologue to the Yakuza or Like a Dragon series but as something new, and Yokoyama said at Tokyo Game Show 2026 that, although the Tojo Clan and Kamurocho appear, "we don't think it would be right to call it a series entry" (AUTOMATON, Sep 29, 2026). Much of the press calls it a prequel all the same. Both views are set out on Tojo Clan and Is Stranger Than Heaven a Yakuza Game?.

Why does the story span fifty years?

Abe said the start in Kokura in 1915 and the end in Shinjuku in 1965 were fixed from the beginning, because founding a syndicate needed decades rather than the week-long arcs of earlier RGG games, per Game Informer. Yokoyama said the game was first conceived as a trilogy and then packed into one game whose main story he called "quite massive." The story was first written with a Japanese founder; Abe said Makoto's mixed heritage was added to give him a strong motive. More on Development.

How Makoto changes over the eras

Makoto starts out thinking and speaking in English and ends up Japanese in manner. Abe told Game Informer that his thoughts shift from English to Japanese over five to ten years, that his battle shouts move from English to Japanese, and that his body language, personal space and even lip animation grow more Japanese over the eras. Yu Shirota said the teenage Makoto and the 1960s Makoto sound clearly different, and the cast speak regional accents such as Hiroshima's and Osaka's (Game Informer, Oct 21, 2026). His look changes too: he has bleached hair by 1929. More on Makoto Daito.

Act I: Kokura story trailer

SEGA's first story trailer, "Act I: Kokura," was posted on Steam on Oct 21, 2026 (Final Weapon reported it on Oct 16). SEGA says it traces the events that lead Makoto onto Orpheus's ship and "the harsh realities" waiting in Kokura, and that more trailers, one per city, are coming. Final Weapon describes the series as running city by city from Kokura to Kamurocho. As of Nov 3, 2026 no second act trailer had appeared on the game's Steam news.

What is not known

As of Nov 3, 2026: how Makoto gets from the Iwaki Family to his own clan; what the "tremendous secret" of 1965 is; where Amaru, "a man living in hiding in Japan," fits; who the Veiled Stranger, played by Cordell Broadus, is searching for in postwar Japan; how the story of Yu Shinjo, Makoto's "oldest friend and biggest rival" in Yokoyama's words, ends; and how long the story is. The cast is on Characters and Cast.
