Yu Shinjo is Makoto Daito's closest friend and greatest rival in Stranger Than Heaven, portrayed by Dean Fujioka: "a half-Japanese, half-British man and Daito's lifelong friend," cool-headed and sharp-witted, in SEGA's Sep 25, 2026 description. The two meet as stowaways on the ship from San Francisco in 1915, where the smuggler Orpheus catches them and takes them to Japan. Shinjo is slightly older and more ambitious than Makoto, with aims to "reshape Japan" (Xbox Wire, May 6, 2026). How his path runs through the later eras has not been shown as of Nov 3, 2026. The clip is the May 6, 2026 Xbox Presents broadcast, where Dean Fujioka introduces Shinjo.

Who is Yu Shinjo?
Like Makoto, Shinjo is of mixed heritage and seeks a new life in Japan. RGG Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama called him Makoto's "oldest friend and biggest rival" when presenting the game on May 6, 2026 (PC Gamer). Final Weapon, describing SEGA's Gamescom 2026 material, calls him an older, ambitious and contentious boy who forms a bond with Makoto (Final Weapon, Aug 28, 2026). His voyage with Makoto is the start of the story; see San Francisco 1915 and Story. In the clip, from SEGA's Act 1 story trailer, Shinjo tells Makoto that they are in the same boat.
Dean Fujioka
Yokoyama chose Dean Fujioka for Shinjo partly for his musical background, since singing is a core theme of the game (AUTOMATON, Jun 23, 2026). SEGA released Character Intro trailers for Shinjo and Makoto on Sep 13, 2026, and Fujioka joined Yu Shirota for the finale of SEGA's Tokyo Game Show 2026 stages on Sep 21, 2026. See Characters and Cast. The clip is Shinjo's Character Intro.
