The Like a Dragon (Yakuza) series began with Yakuza on PlayStation 2 in Japan in 2005, and its latest release is Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties, out Feb 12, 2026. RGG Studio's own lineup lists more than 20 games and remakes in between, plus the Judgment detective spin-offs. Stranger Than Heaven, out Jan 15, 2027, comes next from the same studio and shares the series' world, but RGG calls it a new title rather than a series entry. The lineup page also lists non-game works: a 2006 drama prequel, the 2007 film, the Kurohyo TV dramas, a 2015 stage play, a 2016 TV drama and the free-to-play Ryu ga Gotoku Online (2018, PC and mobile). RGG released no new game in 2022.
Why Steam dates are a day early
On the US Steam store the recent games are dated a day before SEGA's own date: Infinite Wealth is Jan 25, 2024 on Steam and Jan 26, 2024 in SEGA's release, and Kiwami 3 is Feb 11 against Feb 12, 2026. Stranger Than Heaven follows the pattern: Steam shows Jan 14, 2027 for SEGA's Jan 15, because Steam's data puts the unlock at 05:00 UTC on Jan 15, still the evening of Jan 14 in the Americas. Judgment and Lost Judgment are RGG's detective spin-offs starring Takuya Kimura as former lawyer Takayuki Yagami, set in the same world. SEGA's results count them with Like a Dragon as one series.
What order should you play them in?
Release order works, and the remakes make it easier to start at the beginning of Kiryu's story. The stories that sources place in time:
- Like a Dragon: Ishin! is set at the end of the Edo period around Sakamoto Ryoma, with series faces recast as historical figures. Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan! (2008), never released in English, is the other period piece.
- Dark Ties is a new story set before Yakuza 3, with Yoshitaka Mine playable for the first time.
- Like a Dragon Gaiden covers Kiryu's life between Yakuza 6 and Like a Dragon 8.
- Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is set six months after Infinite Wealth, with Goro Majima.
Ishin! retells history with the cast in new roles rather than continuing the main story, so it can be played at any point.
Where does Stranger Than Heaven fit?
By its story, before all of the modern games: it runs from 1915 to 1965 and shows Makoto Daito founding the Tojo Clan, the crime family most of the series revolves around, with its last chapter in Kamurocho. Its makers, though, call it a new title: RGG Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama said "we don't think it would be right to call it a series entry". The clip is IGN's Michael Higham after the Summer Game Fest 2026 demo, calling it tied to the Yakuza games through the Tojo Clan but "not exactly a prequel."
