Games to Play Before Stranger Than Heaven

No game is required before Stranger Than Heaven: RGG Studio calls it a new title with a new hero. For context, Yakuza 0 and the Kiwami remakes show the Tojo Clan and Kamurocho it leads to, and Like a Dragon: Ishin! is RGG's other period piece.

You do not need to play anything before Stranger Than Heaven. RGG Studio presents it as a completely new title, its hero Makoto Daito is new, and its story starts from nothing in San Francisco in 1915. It is set in the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) world, though, and shows the founding of the Tojo Clan, so the series' games add context: Yakuza 0 and the Kiwami remakes for the Tojo Clan and Kamurocho, and Like a Dragon: Ishin! for RGG's earlier take on historical Japan. These are suggestions, not requirements, and nobody outside RGG has played the whole game yet. In the clip, from SEGA's Gamescom 2026 developer interview, a developer says no knowledge of Yakuza, Judgment or RGG's other games is needed.

Do you need to play Yakuza before Stranger Than Heaven?

No. Director Mikinobu Abe said the game was not meant as a prologue to the series but as "something brand new", and studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama said its controls and progression differ from Like a Dragon's. The previews of October 2026 began with the prologue and needed no background: Makoto, wrongly accused, flees San Francisco on a ship to Japan, where every character he meets is new. See Story and Is Stranger Than Heaven a Yakuza Game?. The clip is Game Rant's Oct 21, 2026 preview of the three-hour pre-release build, describing the prologue.

What series knowledge adds is recognition. The Tojo Clan, which Makoto founds, is the crime family at the center of the Yakuza games, and the last chapter takes place in Kamurocho in 1965, the series' home district, with a "tremendous secret" Yokoyama has not revealed. The clip is IGN's Oct 21, 2026 preview of the three-hour pre-release build.

Yakuza 0, Kiwami and Kiwami 2: the Tojo Clan

Yakuza Kiwami is the remake of the first Yakuza (2005), Kiwami 2 of the second, and Yakuza 0 (2015) is the other early chapter; together they are Kazuma Kiryu's early story in Kamurocho, which Anime News Network calls the main setting of the Yakuza series, among the Tojo Clan that Stranger Than Heaven shows being founded. All three are on Steam and other current platforms, including Switch 2 since 2025, so they are the easiest way in. Yakuza 0 is also where Yokoyama says he learned his casting philosophy, which shaped Stranger Than Heaven's cast of actors and musicians.

Like a Dragon: Ishin!: RGG in historical Japan

Like a Dragon: Ishin! (2023), the remake of a 2014 Japan-only game, is set at the end of the Edo period and recasts series faces as historical figures. It is the closest thing to Stranger Than Heaven's period setting, though the approaches differ: Ishin! retells history with familiar faces, while Stranger Than Heaven tells an original story with new characters across the Taisho and Showa eras. Stranger Than Heaven also does not aim for accuracy: Yokoyama said the team prioritizes "convincing lies" over history. In the clip, IGN's Oct 21, 2026 preview recalls director Mikinobu Abe saying the game is not trying to be accurate to its time.

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties: the latest RGG action

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties (Feb 12, 2026) is RGG's most recent brawler, and Yokoyama said it contains major hints about the series' direction. It does not prepare you for Stranger Than Heaven's fighting, which RGG built differently: Makoto's left and right sides are on separate buttons, with directional guards and parries. See Combat. The clip is GameSpot's Aug 26, 2026 preview of a pre-release build.

What about Ichiban Kasuga's games?

Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth follow Ichiban Kasuga, whom Yokoyama calls the series' biggest turning point in 20 years. They are big sellers, at 3.12 million and 2.05 million by SEGA's June 2026 count, but the furthest from Stranger Than Heaven's 1915 to 1965 story, so they matter only if you want Kasuga's own; Kasuga's Japanese voice actor is not in Stranger Than Heaven. The full list is on Like a Dragon Games in Order.

Games like Stranger Than Heaven

Its nearest relatives are RGG's own: the Like a Dragon games above and the Judgment detective spin-offs, made by the same studio. Beyond them, GamesRadar+ reported that the success of Ghost of Tsushima helped persuade the team to bring Ishin! West, a sign of the audience RGG had in mind for period Japan. Showbiz, where Makoto composes songs from recorded sounds and stages shows, has no close equivalent elsewhere; see Showbiz. The clip is Game Rant's Oct 21, 2026 preview, passing on what RGG said of the full game.

Do I need to play Yakuza before Stranger Than Heaven? No. Stranger Than Heaven is a new title with a new hero and starts its own story in 1915; RGG Studio says it is not a Like a Dragon series entry.

What should I play before Stranger Than Heaven for context? Yakuza 0 and the Kiwami remakes show the Tojo Clan and Kamurocho that Stranger Than Heaven leads up to, and Like a Dragon: Ishin! is RGG's other game set in historical Japan.

Is Stranger Than Heaven good for new players? It is built to be. Stranger Than Heaven's previews started with a prologue that teaches the combat in a police chase, and no series knowledge was needed to follow the Kokura story.

Is Stranger Than Heaven like Like a Dragon: Ishin!? Both are period pieces from RGG Studio, but Ishin! recasts familiar series faces as historical figures, while Stranger Than Heaven has an all-new cast across five eras from 1915 to 1965.
