Combat

Stranger Than Heaven's combat gives Makoto Daito two independently controlled sides, a left and a right arm and leg, with light attacks on the bumpers, heavy attacks on the triggers, grabs on both triggers, and directional guards, dodges and parries. Everything known comes from SEGA and from previews of pre-release builds, the latest embargoed to Oct 21, 2026.

Stranger Than Heaven's combat splits Makoto Daito in two: his left side and his right side are controlled independently, so players chain attacks, charge strikes, pin enemies, and block with one hand while countering with the other, as SEGA's Steam page puts it. On a controller each bumper is a light attack and each trigger a heavy attack for its side, both triggers together grab or tackle, and blocking, dodging and parrying are all directional. It is a brawler in the tradition of RGG Studio's Like a Dragon (Yakuza) games, but with new controls built around that two-sided body. The game is out on Jan 15, 2027, so everything here comes from SEGA, Xbox and hands-on previews of pre-release builds, each named with its date. The clip is the official combat overview, narrated in Japanese by a developer, as IGN posted it on May 20, 2026.

What are the controls?

The May 6, 2026 Xbox Presents broadcast laid the layout out on an Xbox controller: Makoto's right arm and leg sit on RB and RT, his left arm and leg on LB and LT, and pressing LT and RT together tackles. IGN's October hands-on describes the same split from the player's side: the bumpers give the light attacks of each side and the triggers the heavy ones. PlayStation buttons and PC keyboard bindings have not been published as of Nov 3, 2026; on a DualSense the same layout would sit on L1, R1, L2 and R2. In the clip Game Rant's Josh Cotts describes the layout from the October 2026 build.

Input (Xbox) Action
LB Left light attack (left arm)
RB Right light attack (right arm)
LT Left heavy attack (left leg)
RT Right heavy attack (right leg)
LT + RT Grab or tackle
Guard + a light attack, timed Directional parry

Grabs, tackles and pins

Squeezing both triggers at once grabs or tackles the enemy in front of Makoto, Game Informer reported from the Summer Game Fest 2026 build. Pinning enemies is one of the moves SEGA lists on Steam beside chained and charged attacks; how a pin works in detail has not been shown. GamesRadar+ adds, from trailer footage, throwing foes off ledges and Molotov cocktails. In the clip IGN's Michael Higham describes the two-trigger grab in the Summer Game Fest 2026 demo.

Guard, dodges and parries

Defense follows the same left and right logic. Blocking and dodging are directional, and so is the parry: while holding guard, a left or right light attack timed to the incoming blow staggers the attacker, IGN wrote on Oct 21, 2026. That parry is the part previewers single out most: Game Informer's Brian Shea needed seven tries and patient parrying to beat the swordsman who closes the Osaka section of the June demo. In the clip IGN's Michael Higham explains the parry from the October 2026 build.

Finishers and the mercy choice

The Xbox Presents footage showed context-sensitive finishing moves and a brawl around a car, the kind of environmental move the Like a Dragon games call Heat Actions; SEGA has not given Stranger Than Heaven's version a name. GamesRadar+ also saw a prompt over a beaten opponent offering "Show him mercy" or "Show him no mercy". What each choice changes has not been explained as of Nov 3, 2026. In the clip the official combat overview's Japanese narration lists fights in a speeding car, big moves that fell an enemy at once, and finishing actions for particular situations.

How enemies fight back

Enemies are not punching bags in the preview builds. PCGamesN's Tom Hopkins found that foes block repeated combos and feint, and that a Summer Game Fest boss could knock Makoto out in two hits; another, an agile woman, feigned injury to sweep his legs. The three-hour October build ended in a fight with Shimura, a hulking boss with a huge melee weapon, Game Informer reported. Bosses named so far are Oki, of the Oki Clan in Kokura, and Shimura. The clip is Easy Allies' Summer Game Fest 2026 preview, on the sword-wielding boss that closed its demo.

Did the combat change after the demos?

Yes. Director Mikinobu Abe told IGN that RGG Studio reworked the combat after feedback on the earlier demos. IGN's Michael Higham had called the June build's fighting "slower, clunky"; after the October session he called his view "a complete 180-degree turn," with the directional parry the thing that clicked. Not everyone was won over: PCGamesN, playing the same October build, found the group street fights "clunky and over-engineered".

Growth and boosts

Makoto gets stronger in ways that sit outside the fight itself. Orpheus teaches him to roll cigarettes, a crafting system whose cigarettes give temporary stat boosts, and each weapon type can be upgraded to learn new techniques. A full skill tree, levels or a named progression system had not been shown as of Nov 3, 2026; Yokoyama has said only that the progression systems differ from Like a Dragon's. GamesRadar+ reported hunger and thirst meters from trailer footage, which no official source has confirmed.

How is it different from Like a Dragon?

Masayoshi Yokoyama listed different controls and different progression systems among the reasons Stranger Than Heaven is not a Like a Dragon entry (AUTOMATON, Sep 29, 2026). The older brawlers, from Yakuza 0 to Like a Dragon Gaiden, map light and heavy attacks to two face buttons and build combos from their order; here the shoulder buttons pick which side of the body strikes, and guarding and parrying depend on direction. It is real-time action, not the turn-based combat of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. See Is Stranger Than Heaven a Yakuza Game? for the rest of the comparison. The clip is GameSpot's Aug 26, 2026 preview.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stranger Than Heaven turn-based? No. Stranger Than Heaven is a real-time brawler, closer to Yakuza 0 and Like a Dragon Gaiden than to the turn-based Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

What are the controls in Stranger Than Heaven? On Xbox, LB and RB are the left and right light attacks, LT and RT the left and right heavy attacks, and both triggers together grab or tackle. Guard, dodge and parry are directional; PlayStation and PC bindings are not published as of Nov 3, 2026.

How do you parry in Stranger Than Heaven? Hold guard and press the left or right light attack just as the blow lands, on the side it comes from. A good parry staggers the enemy, according to IGN's Oct 21, 2026 preview.

Does Stranger Than Heaven have Heat Actions? Stranger Than Heaven has context-sensitive finishers, shown at Xbox Presents on May 6, 2026, including one with a car. SEGA has not called them Heat Actions or named the system.

Can you use guns in Stranger Than Heaven? Guns appear among the weapons in Stranger Than Heaven's May 6, 2026 Xbox Presents footage, alongside knives, hammers and swords. See Weapons.

Is the combat in Stranger Than Heaven hard? Previews of Stranger Than Heaven describe bosses that punish button mashing: one could knock Makoto out in two hits in the June 2026 demo. Difficulty settings have not been announced as of Nov 3, 2026.
