Beginner's Guide
Early tips for Stranger Than Heaven drawn only from SEGA's explanations and hands-on previews of pre-release builds (Summer Game Fest, June 2026, and the October 2026 three-hour build): learn the directional parry, grab with both triggers, use weapons, roll cigarettes and record sounds for Showbiz.
The most useful Stranger Than Heaven tip from the previews is to learn the directional parry: hold guard and tap the light attack on the side the blow is coming from, which staggers the attacker, and the harder fights in the preview builds were won that way. The game is not out until Jan 15, 2027, so every tip on this page comes from SEGA's own explanations or from hands-on previews of pre-release builds, each named and dated: the Summer Game Fest demo of June 2026 and the three-hour build whose previews went up on Oct 21, 2026. Controls and balance may change by launch, and this page will be checked against the released game. The clip is IGN's Oct 21, 2026 preview of the three-hour pre-release build.

How do you play Stranger Than Heaven?
You control Makoto Daito's left and right sides separately. SEGA's Xbox Presents controls put the right arm and leg on RB and RT and the left on LB and LT; IGN's October preview describes the bumpers as light attacks and the triggers as heavy for each side. Steam's description adds that you can block with one hand and counter with the other, chain attacks, charge strikes and pin enemies. The prologue's police chase in San Francisco is the combat tutorial, per IGN's Oct 21, 2026 preview. The full system is on Combat. The clip is SEGA's combat overview trailer, narrated in Japanese by a developer.
Combat tips from the previews
- Parry on the right side. While holding guard, a left or right light attack timed to the incoming blow staggers the enemy. IGN's Michael Higham, unsure of the combat in June, wrote in October that the directional parry clicked (Oct 21, 2026).
- Be patient with bosses. In the Summer Game Fest build Game Informer needed seven tries at the final swordsman in Osaka, won with patient parries (Jun 11, 2026).
- Don't spam combos. PCGamesN found that enemies block repeated combos and feint, and a Summer Game Fest boss could knock Makoto out in two hits (Jul 18, 2026). Another boss feigned injury to sweep the player's legs.
- Grab with both triggers. Squeezing both triggers grabs or tackles (Game Informer, Jun 11, 2026); dodging and blocking are directional too.
- Watch out in group fights. PCGamesN found the October build's street fights against groups "clunky and over-engineered" (Oct 21, 2026), so expect crowds to be harder than one-on-one fights.
- Use what is around you. The Xbox Presents footage showed context finishing moves and a brawl involving a car (May 6, 2026).
Which weapons should you use?
Pick by the fight. In IGN's October build the massive hammer breaks guards but slows movement, and attacks change with the equipped weapon; the previews also showed an odachi sword, a one-handed knife, a wooden club and a crowbar. SEGA says weapons can be upgraded and have special attacks, and IGN says each weapon type gains new techniques as it is upgraded. Every pre-order includes the weapon Dosu: Kagekiri. See Weapons and Pre-order Bonus. In the clip, from SEGA's combat overview trailer, the developer explains in Japanese that weapons such as knives, hammers and swords are upgraded with new materials.
Roll cigarettes before a hard fight
Orpheus teaches Makoto to roll cigarettes, a crafting system whose cigarettes give temporary stat boosts (IGN, Oct 21, 2026). The previews do not list which boosts each kind gives. GamesRadar+ reported hunger and thirst meters from trailer footage, but no official source has confirmed them. The clip is IGN's Oct 21, 2026 preview of the three-hour pre-release build.
Showbiz: start collecting sounds early
Makoto's music is built from sounds he records anywhere: SEGA showed brooms, trains and enemy impacts going into a library for compositions, and a Game Informer preview player used a crying baby and his own weapon striking a thug (Oct 21, 2026). The more you record as you explore and fight, the more you have to compose with. Performers are found through rumors and NPC dialogue, so talk to people. Before a show you choose the setlist, the star, the band, staging, lighting and ticket prices, and Game Informer's player bargained with shop owners for billboard space to promote it. The show itself is an easygoing rhythm game of timed light and stage effects, per IGN. See Showbiz. The clip is SEGA's Showbiz In-Depth Look, from a pre-release build.
Make money in the Kure fight arena
In Kure the October build had a fighting arena where you bet on yourself against tougher opponents, then rematch beaten foes under handicaps such as a time limit or no weapons for bigger payouts (PCGamesN and Game Informer, Oct 21, 2026). Kure also has a masked serial killer roaming as a tough optional fight, so save him until Makoto is stronger. See Minigames and Side Content and Kure 1929. The clip is IGN's Oct 21, 2026 preview of the three-hour pre-release build.
Explore every era
Each era adds new activities, and Game Rant found that in one era almost every building could be entered, with side quests, random thug encounters, merchants and restaurants. Whether you can go back to earlier cities is not known as of Nov 3, 2026: PC Gamer noted that Yokoyama calls each era a "stage", which leaves the question open, so doing side content before moving on is the safe choice. The order of the cities is on Five Eras and Cities. The clip is Game Rant's Oct 21, 2026 preview of the three-hour pre-release build.
Frequently asked questions
How do you parry in Stranger Than Heaven? Hold guard and press the light attack on the side the enemy's blow is coming from, timed to the hit; in the October 2026 preview build of Stranger Than Heaven this staggered the attacker.
How do you grab in Stranger Than Heaven? Squeeze both triggers (LT and RT on Xbox) to grab or tackle, as SEGA showed and Game Informer described from the June 2026 Stranger Than Heaven demo.
Is Stranger Than Heaven hard? The previews found it demanding: Stranger Than Heaven bosses in the June 2026 demo blocked combos, feinted and could knock Makoto out in two hits. Difficulty settings have not been announced as of Nov 3, 2026.
Can you play Stranger Than Heaven without knowing Yakuza? Yes. Stranger Than Heaven's prologue teaches the controls from scratch and RGG presents it as a new title; see Games to Play Before Stranger Than Heaven.
Are these tips final? No. Every tip here comes from SEGA or from previews of pre-release Stranger Than Heaven builds, and the page will be checked against the game after its Jan 15, 2027 release.
